Recently one of our Storytime videos titled ‘Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (by Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault) has surpassed 40,000 views on youtube. I have to say, I’m a little surprised at the amount of children that have tuned in to watch it!
It is easily the most popular Storytime video I’ve done, incidentally it is my daughter’s favourite book as well! So why do children love that book so much?
At first glance, it may appear a little boring, after all, it’s just about the letters of the alphabet and a coconut tree! There’s no beautiful illustrations and no adorable characters. However, children don’t mind, as the story has a good rhythm when it’s read to them, and they especially like the sounds of ‘Chicka Chicka Boom Boom’ - they think it’s funny!
It’s actually good that so many children like it, because it really gets them familiar with the alphabet. They learn all the letters, and learn the order of the letters too. Not to mention, learning about family (even if they are just letters)!
We have used this book also in some of our Little Cubs sessions and based a craft activity around it - making a coconut tree and sticking the letters around it, the children loved it. So it can be great teaching resource too!
Even though this book was published in 1989, it still remains hugely popular - and rightly so, from a child’s perspective it is funny with a catchy rhyme and from a teacher’s perspective it has educational value.
So if your child hasn’t already seen it, here it is:
